I emphasise ease and freedom in the throat and larynx. My method of effective exercises enables the voice to become more resonant naturally and feel no strain. I work to a professional level and I am an extremely supportive teacher. Many of my students go on to take up places at top conservatoires, Oxbridge Choral scholarships and to sing professionally.
Susannah Self studied voice and composition at the Royal College of Music and Cambridge University. Her fabulous technique is based on 12 years of intensive study with with Josephine Veasey, vocal consultant at ENO. Susannah won scholarships to study in Germany and The Banff Centre, Canada.
Her international solo singing work has taken her all over the world, including The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, Opera North and the opera houses of Lisbon, Lyon, Luxembourg, the Middle East and the Far East. For many years she sang as a house soloist at the Flemish Opera in Antwerp and Ghent, and The Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg. She has sung as a soloist with several continental orchestras including regular appearances with the Flemish Philharmonic. She frequently appears as a soloist with choral societies in the UK. Susannah played Katisha in The Mikado at the Savoy Theatre for a whole run to critical acclaim.
She is also a composer with four symphonies, three operas and six CDs to her credit. Together with her husband Michael Christie she runs a music theatre company which promotes new vocal work and gives residential courses in voice. Susannah runs voice workshops for the English Sinfonia, Dartington Summer School, Opera North, Skyros (Greece), Esalen (California) Rancho La Puerta (Mexico) and she is a visiting professor of voice and composition at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
